Who we are
The 5 Tool Players Scout Team is built around Southern California’s top high school baseball prospects. Through hands-on, boots-on-the-ground scouting, we identify MLB draft-ready talent, along with committed and uncommitted recruits who possess the ability to compete at the next level. We work to support each player’s continued development.
Our mission is simple: to help baseball players grow, improve, and reach the next level. Over the years, 5 Tool Players has helped hundreds of student-athletes and families achieve their college and professional baseball goals while earning recognition within Southern California’s scouting community.
The program
Founded in 2007 by Eric Martins, then an area scout for the Oakland Athletics and current Player Development Instructor/Infield & In-Game Strategy for the Oakland A’s, 5 Tool Players has grown into one of the region’s premier scout teams. Today, the program is led by Steve Doherty, a Long Beach State alumnus who was drafted twice and spent 10 years teaching, coaching and scouting in Southern California before taking over as President, General Manager, and Scouting Director.
Our fall season runs on Sundays from late August through early November, providing an environment built for exposure, competition, and continued growth.
Proven results
The impact speaks for itself. To date, 245 players have committed out of high school to 84 college programs, including Division I, Division II, NAIA, and junior college programs. In addition, 48 alumni have advanced to professional baseball, including six currently on Major League rosters, and eight players signed with professional organizations following this year’s 2026 MLB Draft.
